Bagan

Bagan was a very special place. Historically speaking it has been a capital in the kingdom of Pagan from the 9th to the 13th century. In that period more than 10000 stupas, temples, pagodas and monasteries were built on the Bagan plain and more than 2000 still exist. I never got a good answer to my question: Why?

We visited some  that are restored and maintained and they are impressive and slightly surrealistic.

We stayed at a hotel by the Irrawaddy river and we slept in chalets, The meals were eaten on a deck overlooking the river.

And of course there were ruins and Buddha statues.DSCF2063

What I will remember longest is the baloon ride at sunrise above teh Bagan plateau.

Two more pictures that might need some explainations. One is a flock of sheep driven by their shephard seen from the baloon. The other is of two women with straw hats and yokes on a field, again seen from straight above. (Actually the two photos I am most happy with)

As we landed on a field the ground crew was already there with the champagne!

It was great experience and one of the high points of the trip. Well worth getting up early!
