Armenia was the last country we visited, and we saw many churches and monsteries. But we hardly saw any castles or fortresses. Armenia does not have many natural resources, some copper and that is about all.
Armenia and Azerbaijan arein conflict over Nagorno-Karabach, and Armenia and Turkey still have the genocide of 1,5 million Armenians in 1915 as an open wound with closed borders and no bilateral contact.
Armenia has about 3 million inhabitants, but 7 million Armenians live outside the country. Money from them are important, for instance has an Argentinan-Armenian built the international airport at Yerevan and is the owner of it. Another Armenian in the US (former CEO of MGM) have given money to build roads. Unfortunately not for maintenance of the roads!
We stayed in the capital, Yerevan, and had day-trips to different places, often with a church, from themain cathedral to old, small churches in remote locations.
